Do you need to be a teacher to also coach basketball in Texas schools?

I moved from Michigan recently and would like to volunteer as a basketball coach in some capacity at a school. In Michigan, you do not need to teach in order to coach, but it seems like you need to down here in Texas. Anybody know?Do you need to be a teacher to also coach basketball in Texas schools?
In Texas public schools you must be a certified teacher or working on your certification to coach. Depending on the school district, you may not actually have to "teach," but you must have the certification.Do you need to be a teacher to also coach basketball in Texas schools?
If you want a job - YES! Especially if you are in the secondary level.

I was an elementary teacher in Texas and wanted to go to middle school. Every interview I went on, I was asked that almost before I was asked about my teacher certification and qualifications: "What can you coach?" Volleyball, track, basketball, etc......

Sports take priority over academics in Texas. I taught in two different school districts and it was the same all over the state! I cannot tell you how many times a job posting would read EXACTLY like this:

Football coach (ability to teach English/math/science/social studies/etc...)

The coaching position was listed first and the academics are an afterthought if you are willing to coach....PATHETIC

Although, I made about $10,000 more (in elementary school without the coaching) but I'm thankful my husband was transferred back to Missouri :O) Good luck.Do you need to be a teacher to also coach basketball in Texas schools?
Yes! you can't teach in Texas without some kind of degree. You can have a degree in sports fitness but also need a degree in education! Hope that helps i worked in Texas before! Good Luck
