GPS - do overcast days like in central ohio affect GPS?
I tried a gps - it worked on and off, and I wonder if the weather can have a large affect on its ability to perform. The unit I tried was a magellan 300 roadmate. It cost 299.99, but I am willing to spend more on a reliable unit.
Can weather cause the unit to not pickup a signal - is this common?GPS - do overcast days like in central ohio affect GPS?
magellan 300 comes with a b uilt in antenna that is mounted on the GPS device; that is usually positioned/ fixed inside your car on above the dash board/ below the windshield etc which means that even in good conditions; the receiver will get moderate signal levels provided that 1. its using a built in - probably passive antenna-.
2. the antenna - which is mounted on the device is placed inside the car/ even if close to the windshield.

GPS units will work during overcast days. Cloud cover or other weather conditions, for the most part, won't affect the reception of the unit. GPS signals are blocked by solid objects, such as a roof when inside, or even the metal roof of a car- sometimes just moving the unit from the dashboard where the unit receives the signals through the windshield to the center armrest will cause the unit to not receive the signals.
However, the atmospheric conditions do affect the radio signals that the unit receives. This can affect the timing of the signal, which in theory degrades the accuracy of the unit- also known as dilution of precision. In real life use, this is negligible and if the unit is receiving more than 5 satellites you probably won't notice- the difference is several feet at most. Also differential GPS such as WAAS will reduce that error even further.

I've had experience with both TomToms and Magellan. I had frequent trouble with the TT getting turn info. too late. Also, getting updates were a pain to get. This is just my opinion on your question, since I have used a TomTom and Garmin that cost me twice as much but didn鈥檛 give as much - I think I can express my small opinion on the mater. For those who don鈥檛 agree please excuse my 2 cents.
First off my gps has a 5 inch wide-screen not 4.3 inch small screen. My gps is a portable navigation device that works like a small computer - it has calculator, calendar, music, picture, videos, games, and some other cool stuff. It has advanced lane guidance, prices, smart Routes, and free map upgrades.
It has text-to-speech that reads aloud street and point-of-interest names for quicker recognition. This feature is really cool because it specifically tells you which side of the street the location is on unlike other gps's that just tell you where to go, but don鈥檛 tell you what side of the street the location or destination is on.
A 5-inch wide-format touch screen occupies the front of the gps while a large, loud speaker dominates its back. The only physical control to be found is the power button on the unit's top edge. The Mini-USB port on its side serves as the connection for the included 12-volt car charger, computer cable for data connection, and office/home charger.
Unlike its primary competitor, the Garmin, and some TomTom version does not have an SD or microSD card slot, so you're stuck with the device's 2GB of onboard storage (most of which is occupied by map and voice data). Mine came with a SD slot and a 4GB sd card.
The multi surface mount is clever - the gps has mounts on it that allows you to connect a cradle to it which can connect to the free multi surface mount. To attach the gps to your windshield, simply flip out the suction cup, place the device on the windshield, and filp the locking ring switch. The flip-lock suction cup feel as secure as the Garmin's lever-actuated suction cup.
Also included with the gps is a 12-volt car charger, a USB connection cable, and an adhesive disk for attaching the gps to your vehicle's dashboard if windshield mounting is not permissible.
The gps features Advanced Lane Guidance, a new feature to gps's that shows detailed illustrations of complex freeway interchanges, complete with lane information. Arrows overlaid on the illustration notify drivers of what lanes will keep them on the chosen route.
Text-to-speech functionality lets the gps announce street and point-of-interest names aloud. The gps comes bundled with lots of languages English, French, and Spanish voices. Just so you know, im using a newelectronx gps with amigo on it.

I am looking at some GPS systems in the Black Friday ads (TomTom XL325, Magellan Roadmate 1220 - as well as others). I mentioned these to my husband but he said he wants something he can use when he goes hunting and fishing. Do these systems have topical maps for that sort of thing? If not, which systems do? Are there any systems that have both what he wants and the road navigation I am looking for?

Most of the road units will only get your husband to the parking lot. They do not have topographic maps, and are pretty clunky to use off-road. They are not really made to be held in your hand. The Garmin nuvi 500 series can show both road and topographic maps, but you need to find out what is preloaded on the receiver and if you need to buy more maps besides what comes with it. Handheld units can do turn-by-turn directions and be used off-road. However, these handheld units do not give spoken driving instructions. They just beep when you get to a turn. Also, they usually do not come with maps. Some of the Garmin Oregon and Colorado models come with topographic maps, but those topo maps do not give you turn-by-turn directions.

Garmin seem to be on the top end of GPS system manufacture at the minute. Look out especially for systems that have memorycard expansion slots - and a pre-requisite to me now would be bluetooth built in, which will allow you to use it for hands-free cell phone calls.

A question about a car GPS?
Ok so i am looking for a gps for my dad . he needs it for work and needs to be a 7 inch screen.. does anyone know of any great reliable and affordable GPS for car that has a 7 inch screen? i saw this one Magellan RoadMate 1700 7-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator does anyone know if this is a great gps?? thanks in advance =DA question about a car GPS?

To be honest with you, I've heard a lot of crap about the Magellans, so you might want to stay away from that one. The two Garmin's are nearly identical, but the 265WT rates better (and has the FM traffic receiver, a plus). Your best bet is the Garmin Nuvi 265WT. If don't have your mind set on one of those three, you may also want to consider a cheaper one. They don't have all the fancy gadgets like Bluetooth and whatnot, but they get the job done. I myself have a cheap RadioShack one, and it has not failed to get me out of a situation yet. In fact, it's usually better at getting me places than Google Maps or that horrible Mapquest.

I have the tomtom, and actually dont like it at all, but my grandmother has the Garmin and we used it to go to New York, and it was wonderful. I loved it, it is soooo easy to use, and it is so quick at recalculating if you miss a turn or something it recalculates a new rout for you in seconds, and my Tom tom doesnt do that it takes forever, and its very complicated to use. Im not a big technology person, so I like things that are easy to use, so in my own experience the Garmin Nuvi is the best, and ive actually heard alot of other people say the exact same thing. My cousin has the magellen and I think she had it for like 6 months and it fell apart she said it was a cheap piece of crap. The Garmin is usually one of the pricier ones but its definately worth the extra money, and I know this Friday I think its WalMart has a great deal on a garmin, its only like $89.00, last year when I bought my grandmothers it was 300, so thats definately a great deal. Good luck with that. Hope you find the right one that works for you.

Im not a big technology person, so I like things that are easy to use, so in my own experience the Garmin Nuvi is the best, and ive actually heard alot of other people say the exact same thing. My cousin has the magellen and I think she had it for like 6 months and it fell apart she said it was a cheap piece of crap. The Garmin is usually one of the pricier ones but its definately worth the extra money, and I know this Friday I think its WalMart has a great deal on a garmin, its only like $89.00, last year when I bought my grandmothers it was 300, so thats definately a great deal. Good luck with that. Hope you find the right one that works for you.

It sounds like your "touchscreen calibration" has gone haywire. I'd recommend first trying to do a screen calibration. Be VERY precise when prompted to touch the indicated points on the screen. It's probably best to use something like a PDA stylus or the tip of a ballpoint pen (with the actual ballpoint retracted of course) rather than your fingertip when performing the procedure.
If that fails, it's possible that doing a "reset for first use" may cure the problem, but I'd really recommend that you check with Magellan support first. The reset will ERASE everything saved on the unit.
If you want to try the hard reset, you need to get into a hidden menu using the bottom buttons. Press plus-plus-minus-minus-plus-minus (++--+-) to access the menu.shop bop

GPS navigators compatible for Mac?
I just got a Magellan Roadmate and the guy at bestbuy said it would work for Mac even though it wasn't listed under the system requirements and what do you know it didn't work. Basically I couldn't update the software or get it running up like it's supposed to because I have a Macbook.

What's the best mobile GPS travel system available.?
I am looking at the Magellan RoadMate GPS 1430 on The Home Shopping Network 4.3 inch screen with 6 million points of intrest for $229.00. I found it on line at the Magellan Website for $399.00, but wondered if Magellan makes good systems. Magellan has been a marine gps company for a long time people say garmin is the best but that's opinionated i sell gps's at my job and i have sued all of them from mio to gramin from tom tom to magellan
with that being said magellan has the fast route caculation times then any other gps on the market but they also have their cons garmin on the other hand is the slowest imho on obtaining a gps signal half the time i cant even get one in my store where i can on most others
in my own opinion i would go with a tom tom I have lined 6 gps devices across the dash of my jeep liberty and the tom tom go 720 beat the magellan 4250 the garmin nuvi 260w the mio moov 300 the navman f15 the navigon 2100 maxx magellan did calculate the route the fastest but it was lacking in some specific directions garmin took for ever to grab the gps mio was fast and the navman i ignored do to its retarded functions the navman was just ok the tom tom routed very quick held the gps and i can correct the map right on the device if need be tom tom was the winner hands down for me and i was partial to the magallan

Yeah the GPS doesn't use the mobile network, as long as you have you're own GPS software like navigon, with the maps saved on the phone. Hi I am about to purchase a gps car navigation unit, basically I am driving from MO to Orlando and back and think it would be better than mapquest. Of these two that I mentioned above, what would you recommend and what are the pros and cons if you have experienced any? The Magellan and Garmin are almost a hundred bucks cheaper but the Tomtom seem to have more features , I don't know! But these are the three cheapest models out there. Why is my GPS interfering with my radar detector?
I have a Cobra XRS 9430 Radar Detector and I just purchased a Magellan Roadmate 1220 GPS. When I turn both on, the radar is alerting me endlessly of an X and Ka alert. It's clear to me the GPS is causing this. When I turn the Roadmate off, the alerts stop. Or is it different for each one? Recently, my Roadmate 1412 has been acting weird so I had to go back to using my old Roadmate 2000. The 2000 does not have an updated map.

There are only TWO mapping companies out there providing maps for GPS producers. If you had two different branded GPS made around the same time, the maps would be the same.

I would immediately recommend anything that Garmin makes - The screens are brightly lit and colorful, the female voice that prompts you when you need to turn, etc. is not terribly annoying, the touchscreen controls are large and easy to use, and it seems to be easy to pick up the satellite signal almost anywhere (I did have trouble in some tunnels and the mountains of upstate New York, and some backroads in Massachusetts, but it picks up where it left off as soon as it finds it again.)
The Garmin StreetPilot C330 is only $279.99 at BestBuy.com, that's the one my Aunt uses and I have the most experience with. The Garmin Nuvi 660 is what I'm saving for - It has a larger screen than the C330, a built-in antenna rather than one that is attached to a cable, and Bluetooth so I can use my phone hands-free - That model is on sale on BestBuy.com for $899.

I'm looking for a decent car gps navigation system that's under or around $250.
It will be replacing my Magellan Roadmate 360, which has some serious issues. First, it doesn't have retail stores beyond restaurants and gas stations listed in the points of interest database. Second, it requires you to put in the township/district instead of the real city or town name when putting in an address, which is pretty impossible to determine beforehand.

How can I transfer locations from old Magellan GPS to new Garmin ?
My Magellan Roadmate 360 was pretty impressive when new 11 years ago, but now is developing several "quirks" and I would like to replace it with a newer, faster, better Garmin. Over this time I have saved many locations that I have visited while at the location. (I do not have a specific address for most.) Is there some way that I can save and transfer these locations to the Garmin? Or do I have to visit each location again while the old Magellan is still alive and enter and save the location on the Garmin.?

Mounting my GPS -- Magellan
I purchased a Magellan Roadmate 1412 GPS and I cannot figure out how to mount the thing to my window. It comes with a built-in suction device, so I push it up against the window and flip the level. Check to see if there is a "liner" over the bottom of the suction cup mount. Some manufacturers put them on there to keep the cup surface clean until you install it. Also try cleaning your windshield well and use rubbing alcohol in the area you are mounting the GPS.

3 days ago I used my Magellan Roadmate GPS system to find a place. The little arrow indicating my location has not oved or changed since. I have turned it off and on, plugged in and on battery power. I have tried resetting GPS coordinates and resetting factory settings. It is only 4 months old. Any help before I send it back?Magellan GPS frozen up?
There is a small round hole on one side of the unit.
Using a ball pen or the tip of a paper clip, with the unit ON, press down on the button that is recessed in the hole (you should here or feel a small click). Hold for about two seconds, then let go. wait until the unit resets itself.
This should take it out of its locked mode.
ADDED:
The hole I'm referring to is very tiny, about 1/16" diameter. In mine (Magellan Maestro 3100, it's located on the side opposite to the Power-in, next to the MMC memory card slot. The hole is labeled "Reset". You should have some way to reset yours. Read the manual, and if you don't have one, go to magellan.com and look for it. Or check sites like these: http://www.ehow.com/how_7384907_magellan鈥?/a> or http://www.magellangps.com/Products/Road鈥?/a> or google magellan roadmate XXX, XXX being your model number.

Magellan Roadmate 1412 GPS system won't recognize my region(CANADA)?
I don`t understand why this problem had occured. I was using it regularly and all of a sudden, it says `proceed to` and its in the middle of no where. I check what `reegion`it was set to and it said lower 48 states. What I dont get is, why would it freeze all of a sudden, and not recognize CANADA at all. It says that the only region available is the USA. I tried the website and it said it will cost me at least 80$ to update my software. but I think my GPS would only have a 20$ value now, so i dont get whats the point. My QUESTION IS: What can I do, and if i have no choice but to download the map pack then is there a free verrsion?Magellan Roadmate 1412 GPS system won't recognize my region(CANADA)?
If you had Canada maps before this problem then you should have Canada maps now. Since you are having problems nothing you do now will hurt and may even help. I would do a master reset back to factory settings and see what happens then. Hopefully your unit is just a bit mixed up and a reset will bring it back to normal. However there is also the possibility that the memory in it has malfunctioned which is why it is unable to recognize Canada. If you continue to have problems I suggest you call Magellan and see if they have possible solutions to your problem.
Oh and to answer your last question, there are no free maps. You have to pay for any map upgrades unless you have a GPS that offered free map upgrades.used boats

Try connecting it to your computer, the power connector should be a standard USB connector.
I had problems with the 1200, and just by connecting it to my computer, somehow gets it to correct whatever glitch it has.
This is how I also correct the common problem these have with showing the wrong time and giving you a night screen during the day, and day screen during the night.
Connect to computer, and it somehow resets and fixes this, and then it has the correct time again.

My Magellan GPS is stuck on a certain location?
We are currently moving from California to Texas. We stopped at a gas station to get snacks and such and turned the car off, but left our Magellan Roadmate 5054 on in the car. We got back in and started to get back on the freeway, but our Magellan was stuck on the same spot. We rest it twice but It still is stuck. We even cancled our destination and typed it back in. It is still stuck at the gas station. Does anyone know what we could do to fix this? My Magellan Roadmate GPS is broken, can it be fixed?
The other day I first noticed my Roadmate acting weird when I would plug it in to charge in my car and it would say that it was hooked up to my "pc." Which, it obviously wasn't. So since it didn't read my charger, it wouldn't charge and eventually died.
So as I'm trying to fix it, the input on the side of the device gets pushed into the actual device and now I can't make a connection at all.
I looked into getting a new one, but they are too expensive. Is there a way to repair the one I have? Or even somewhere I can send it?

Magellan does not service products. For receivers returned after the warranty period or for damage not covered by the warranty, customers may purchase a new unit at a reduced cost or reconditioned unit also at a reduced cost.

Magellan RoadMate 300 Problems?
Whenever I put in an address, the Navigation System either says that there is no such address or when it says.... EX: Turn left but the machine says to turn right and the little picture is always going south.
It also says my map is over 1 year old.
How can I get rid of all these problems?

Magellan Roadmate GPS?
I've had this GPS for about 2 months or less. It works great and I love it so far. But since yesterday, it has been stuck at my home location saying I need to make a U-Turn. It doesn't aquire signal anymore. Usually when I put in an address it tells me where to go and turn, it doesn't do that anymore. Is there any way that I can fix this?Magellan Roadmate GPS?

Looking at Magellan roadmate 1440 and Garmin 255w. Both seem to be great systems, one might have ability the other doesn't and vice/versa.Which seems to be better gps Magellan or Garmin?
Garmin is the top brand in North America. They have the strongest satellite system and can re-route fairly quickly. I would never compare a Magellan to a Garmin.
The only other GPS I would consider if i'm spending more than $150 would be a TomTom. The only problem there is they are a European brand and getting tech support or map updates is not easy. TomTom has the easiest User Interface though.
The 255w is a good model and very popular. It has multimedia, expandable memory, Text-to-Speech, only thing it is missing is hands-free calling.
I would definitely reccommend the Garmin though. However, if you start looking in to TomTom go for the TomTom 630. You can find it in Canada for about $299 (in Canada, not sure about the U.S.) and it is a top of the line model. It has almost everything except FM transmitter, which neither of the two you listed have.

They may have worked out this little bug, but if not be warned as it's very annoying!

Magellan RoadMate 1412 - Touchscreen Problem?
The touchscreen on my Magellan 1412 seems to have arbitrarily re-calibrated itself so that the area on the screen you press your finger against is not the area that is highlighted / selected. Because of this, I can't even get to the user options menu to see if there is a re-calibration function. The reset button on the side doesn't seem to do anything other than bring you back to the home screen. MY girls family have a tom tom it is loud and clear and got us around shiittty miami when visiting I'm wondering the same thing too I want to get a gps tmrrw, black friday, a couple features im looking into are, if it has maps of canada also, it has clear speech(her's had that " I pity the fool guy) and if it is point of view I also heard they can be bluetooth which is phone compatible and mp3 and the re-up fee for updated maps idk about that tho good luck

For those who have used this product, what do you think about it? Are you happy with your buy? I need a GPS that can be used not only in the continental US but also in Canada (at least the eastern side -closest to Alaska-) and Alaska. If you have any other suggestions, please lemme know. Magellan RoadMate 1470 and TomTom One 130 - Which has better features, ease of use, etc. why?
I have been using my TomTom One 130 for about 1 1/2 years now and it is sufficient except it tends to take a while to pick up a signal (on hazy days especially). About a month ago my father passed away and he left behind his Magellan RoadMate 1470. I think it may be a couple years older than my TomTom but I'm curious about others' opinions on which is the better device. I do a lot of driving and I have a toddler daughter with me almost always; thus ease of use, simplicity, speed, accuracy, etc. are all very important to me.

Sorry . I ca`nt be much more help. I will stay with my Garmins. Besides, how fast are you driving that you need to know where to turn in 15 seconds? They all work fine. If you expect lightning fast response then you are looking for something in the $hundreds or more.Even my 80`s hand held Garmin still gets me out of the bush if I need it ( unless the batteries die).

Magellan and TomTom is are good GPS but Garmin is better. For a Magellan GPS, I would suggestion Magellan Maestro 4700, Magellan RoadMate 1412, Magellan RoadMate 1470.

Magellan Roadmate Series 1200 GPS - Downloading POI's?
I have a Magellan Roadmate Series 1200 GPS and would like to download a POI (a hotel in Florida I am going to . . . I live in Ontario). I entered the longitude and latitude in the computer program and I even have the USB cable to connect the GPS to the computer. However, how do I transfer the info? Everything I've tried doesn't seem to work. When I press the "transfer" button, nothing seems to happen. Is it b/c it's in the U.S.?

I just bought this thig and I am aggravated. It came with a West region SD card which was blank! I get no detailed maps. How do I upload maps to this dumb this. I bought 2 other programs to try to fix the issue. Roadmate Manager from magellan wont download of course. I bought the Magellan MapSend Direct Route software and stil nothing. So now I have the Delorme Street Atlas 2007 USA and still nothing. the files are not readable on the GPS. Can anyone help?Magellan Roadmate 300?
If you can avoid it, never buy a GPS that requires separate maps. They are always a headache. This may seem to be a waste to you, but your best bet is to buy a Magellan roadmate 760 or later. This higher end model has a hard rive with all of the states and Canada preloaded, and some even have Europe. I have the 700 and 760, and trust me, its more convenient to just pack it in a bag and use it wherever i go, and i never have to think, oh, well, I'm going to Las Vegas lets say, i need to get the other SD card for the southwest, and after that, the Northeast or w/e to go to new york etc. Its like there catch phrase goes, because its true, with the Magellan 760 its "Turn it on and Go"

What do you think about the 'Magellan RoadMate 300R' GPS Navigation System?
I looked at the roadmate but when i compared everything I bought the Tom Tom 300. I am very happy I did. Quick to learn and easy to use. When i showed it to a friend at work he returned his Magellan and now has a Tom Tom also. Check it out and compare! You will agree.

Magellan RoadMate 300?
My RoadMate 300 wasn't working corretly so I tried to reinstall the same firware version again and I guess I corrupted the software. Magellan want's $144 for it and they said I might be able to fix it.
How do I fix it if I can't even turn on the machine?

Magellan roadmate 2000 help PLEASE!?
My Magellan roadmate is not providing voice instructions or displaying the street I'm on when I perform a route. The maneuver information at the bottom of the screen is not showing, nor is the current street I'm on which normally displays at the top of the screen. All it does is show me the map, and the default pink outlining that shows me the route I should take, and traces the route as I drive it. I

I know it's quite a specific question...but our Magellan RoadMate, when plugged in the car charger, says to refer to the computer usage guide. It thinks it is plugged into a computer instead of a car charger and will not charge. If there is anything I can tell someone over-the-phone to try to get it to work, let me know. Most GPS units have multiple languages already installed. You access them through one of the menus. See if you can find a copy of the owner's manual online. You could also search first and then ask at a GPS forum like the one linked below.

If you are speaking of the daylight savings feature, I can help you. Just go to your time settings and check daylight savings time. If it is already checked, uncheck it. One of those should do you.
Now if you are talking about the minutes being off, I can't help you there. I get a different time by a minute or two on my gps than my atomic clock, my cable box, and even my cell phone. If it is more than just a minute or two, call the company and ask for customer service. M-Fandys auto sport
