So I wan't to take my love of basketball to the next level. I wan't this to become my career. What kinds of college courses should I take? What degree should I be striving to earn? I have no idea where to start. What do I have to do to become a basketball talent scout?
Start by contacting a local college, or professional team, finding there scouting department asking them... second spend as much time around ur college basketball team u can, do ur own analysis on all the players, sort of like a portfolio... the degree I think would most help u, is something in sports management... like being an agent... but the classes u have to get are: business to know how to be professional, and organized... statistics, to know how to project players stats, health and wellness, to get a better understanding so u know if someone ur looking at had a previous injury what are the effects of it... also things u want to work at is debate, and may something along the lines of business sales...UR selling ur choice to a team, and if that team believe in u and takes ur choice u get paid...thats how it works in baseball atleast...What do I have to do to become a basketball talent scout?
There is no set career path to being a basketball scout. Professional scouts are almost exclusively former players, coaches, and assistant GMs.
There are other, self-made scouts like those at Scout.com or Rivals.com or Tom Konchalski, or Bob Gibbons. These guys mostly made their careers by going to games, writing down what they see, and making friends with coaches. They make their money through website subscriptions or from coaches paying for scouting reports.
While there are sports specific majors that could lead to one of these jobs down the road, my best advice is to learn how to write clearly, take some journalism courses, specialize in business management, and try to land a job in the marketing or promotions department of a local team or the NBA, if you're near one of their offices.
Or get a notebook, a digital video camera, and a pen and go see some games and start scouting players. What do I have to do to become a basketball talent scout?
I never researched how to become a scout, but I can guarantee you 90% or more of the scouts NBA teams, Overseas teams, and colleges use are either former coaches or current assistant coaches. I don't think you can go wrong getting started there.
