Next you need to figure out what type of power or strength you are lacking. The three basic types of strength are: Base strength, transitional power, and explosiveness or "Reactive" power, they are all different and must be trained in different ways. Now I know a lot of you are wondering what's the difference between the three. Well in short Base Strength is how much weight you can move, Transitional Power is how fast you can move said weight and explosiveness is the maximum speed and distance you can move said weight with each single movement. A good Vertical Jump training routine will include the following exercises:
Base Strength
1: Traditional Squats and Pistol Squats
2: Deadlifts/base building olympic lifts
3: Lunges
4: Core Work (Functional Performance Core Strength= The ability to make your pelvis and spine "lock" and work as a single stable unit, not simply having a 6 pack or being able to do 100 crunches)

I'm seriosly wondering why people say black people in basketball can jump higher, run faster, and shoot better?
Im white so is this a disadvantage?

This is just a guess and I don't mean to convey a negative message here. Perhaps people think the black athlete is better than the white because there are more blacks in basketball and football. The black athlete has depended much more on sports for economic success than whites to get out of poverty in American society. Since there is such a disproportionate number of blacks in sports, this may answer why blacks are perceived to be better athletes than whites.
The white athlete appears to have a much better advantage to achieve economic success outside of sports. Consequently, we don't see as many whites in these sports as we do blacks. This may be attributed to discrimination against blacks in certain segments of society. Also, other means of economic success in the black community may not be stressed because of the lack of education and resources not available to them.
Just some food for thought.

Catching a football has nothing to do with being black, it has to do with reflex and depth perception, as well as timing. Same with shooting, shooting just takes practice. All you can do is stay in shape, study your sport of interest, and practice practice practice. Remember: practice makes permanent, not perfect. Don't think of anything as a disadvantage, just work as hard as you can. In team sports, the intangibles are just as important, so be supportive, be a leader, listen to your coach, and do all of the other important things as well, on and off the court/field/etc.

How can I not get feet blisters when playing basketball?
I find it strange that whenever a play basketball I get these blisters on the part of the soils before the thumb, where feet support the most. One on each foot, the size of a bottle cap. I dont know anyone else having this problem and it happens everytime I play, after having done so for some time (+25 mins)

1) Get powder for your shoes that makes the shoes more "breathable". I have used something like this and it helps A LOT. You can get this powder from any pharmacy store or sports stores.
2) Your shoes are not right for you. Someone said to where tighter shoes but I have noticed, the tighter my shoes were, the more blisters I would get. So, try to find some shoes you are comfortable in.

Your other hand (in my case, left) you place on the side of the ball. This hand controls accuracy. Practice this hold on the ball - it is also the hold used for push passing. When ready to shoot. Extend your legs and jump, extending your bent elbow and pushing your right hand that was at the back of the ball forward. To put backspin on the ball, use your fingertips on your right hand to spin the ball back as you push it forward. What helped me the most is having a public pool with a hoop on the side. Also playing volleyball in the pool will increase your vertical and develop some smaller muscles that otherwise you don't use on the court, but will come in handy at crunch time when you're dead tired.
Like smb above recommended, swimming is a great endurance sport.
I never did handball, but that will develop your footwork well, just like soccer will. If you are in your early teens, I also recommend gymnastics as, if you have noticed, the best players in the sport have that balance and acrobatics advantage. Also gymnasts have the best verticals behind volleyball players, dancers and weightlifters (bet you did not know that basketball is the fourth sport when athletes' verticals are measured).
As you get close to the season, start running about 4 miles a day and increase up to 10 miles a day. There is no substitute to running when it comes to getting in shape.
What helped me the most is getting to the court a couple of hours before the heat is gone. By the time everybody else got on the court I was warmed up, but a little tired, which helps you as most of the sensation you will experience during basketball games is tiredness and fatigue.
Plyometrics and jumping on and off of boxes did miracles for me, but that is only if you are a serious player, and at least in late high school.
And don't forget - do not overdo any of the above. Your body can progress only so much. Wearing those vertical enhancing shoes and braces to school and all Summer like a fool (like I did) can only help so much. 90% of basketball is attitude and knowledge of the game. What summer sport should i play to help my basketball?

-running(also raises stamina)
-long jump/triple jump(also raise endurance)
-biking(also raises stamina and endurance)
to build up hand eye try
-baseball(very useful)

I am 14 years old about 5"8 and 135 lbs. Open gym is in a 2 months and I need to find a good full body workout and strength routine to get ready for it. I want to find a routine that will not take over playing basketball but something that will get the work in there. I want to find out of how long do I have wait to play basketball again if I sprained my ankle. I sprained my ankle on 3/17/10. I couldn't wake for two days. I was taking like baby steps on the third day but it still hurt to walk. Today, I was walking I little bit more better, few pain and limping. 3-At 5'9, you should play point guard so try bouncing 2 basketballs and start running with them when you get better and you can bounce the ball off a wall. You should also get faster. try running up a hill at full speed at least 5 times a day and improve your stamina. Do like 15 suicides a day or run 2 miles.
4- Since your position should be PG, have a pass first mentallity.
5-What school you go to and where it is is also important. Weschester or Fairfax High here in LA are always one of the top teams and get a lot of notice.
6- You should be really good if you think you can make a D1 school. Being one of those players is like 1 in a million.

I am a basketball player with great skill on the offensive and defensive side. I have an NBA shot which goes in nearly everytime, i am an excellent rebounder offensivly and defensivly, i am a fantastic dribbler so good that i am 6' tall and i am an SF and PG on my AAU team. This helps with legs strength and explosiveness...... It will also help your recovery timing so that u can dominate the boards..... also run a lot...... don't just shoot by your self play a bunch of pick up basketball games with some of the kids that might be better than you because there is no other way to simulate a game plus if the kids are better it will make you push yourself more.... also start to hit the gym and lift atleast every other day so that you are stronger plus it helps build endurance and helps with coordination..... also i'd say hang out with the other kids trying out for the team, coaches love kids who are liked by the team because it shows that everyone respects them so if you do all this and the things you say you will it will show the coaches your great work ethic and help you a lot too

I agree that you should check for a treadmill in the gym. I usually run for about 30-45 minutes at least three times a week. I don't know if you play any street ball or anything (at your gym perhaps) but I like to run on days that I play basketball.
Try running on the treadmill and then go play full court games after. You will be so used to playing full court while tired that running in a real game will seem easy.
is there any mountains with high altitude u can climb.
Since there's air u use ur air less and then when u get to normal altitude ur will have an increase in performance.

Where I live there is alot of snow outside during the winter, so running or biking is not an option for me. I have a membership and a gym, however, it does not feature an indoor track.

How come I have trouble scoring in a basketball game?
I'm 10th grade and currently in the JV basketball team. I'm very quick and can shoot the ball well, jumpers and 3 pointers. When we have scrimmages in practice, my shooting percentage is about 50 - 60%. But when it comes to games, I have trouble scoring and I don't know why. Our team has played 3 games and I'm 0 - 6 shooting. Any suggestions?How come I have trouble scoring in a basketball game?
Well that happened to me when i was in 10th grade(i am presently in 12th grade). it is probably just nervousness because i get nervous too when it comes to games. Just Focus on the Basket ignore everything else. Keep your eyes on the hoop and when your in the air( about to shoot) try thinking about you are alone and nothing else is there just you and the basketball court. It helps, all of those distractions, people yelling, cheering, and chanting bothers you. I just only shoot jumpers when i am open and know I have a high percent chance of making it. Or maybe in practice time you can try making shots from 5 different parts of the court 3 inside and 2 outside. Then you can master those areas and you will know the right amount of power to put in the shot and viola, use my method of imaging you and the basketball court only and you'll be sinking those shots.
Try to get involved early in the game, you know take early shots in the game. If you need a little motivation to get you going try faking shots and driving it in into the basket. Another you can do is stay focused defensly, a steal or a block can easily motivate you to start playing offense better.How come I have trouble scoring in a basketball game?

I tried tuning it out, but that only works for some people, not me, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. You can also try scrimmaging under pressure, that might work.

You must play everyday, and dedicate as much time as you can.
1. Dribble, all day, while playing, while laying down, while walking. keep dribbling until the ball feels like second nature to you, also keep your head up while dribbling. Also keep in mind that through the legs all the time does not make you kobe.
2. Shoot- practice on your release, make sure your release is almost identical every time. Remember that a shot is not just arms, wrist and fingertips, you must also use your legs. I use to say in my head a simple phrase, "Release, Rotation, Splash". Meaning keep my arc straight, keep the rotation perfect, and splash, make the ball go in and return towards you once the shot goes in. If you can make your shot do these things you can be good enough to not only be in the team, but be a consistently good player.
3. Run- You must make sure you can keep up with the rest of the people, and also make sure that you are not tired by the first minutes of playing.
4. considering your height, you must be able to shoot well, and dribble extremely well, and playing great defense does not hurt, so in order to develop all these things together you must play as much as you can, and give 100% all the time.
With your height, I'd say the best way to become good is to somehow make everyone else you'll ever face worse. Being perceived as 'good' is relative anyway. I'm a 'good' basketball player compared to senior citizen basketball players and people your height and under.
So I'd say your training should consist of ways to poison opponents before every game. Maybe give opponents complimentary dinners with poison the night before games or something.
