1) Get in the best shape possible in order to outrun and tire out your defender. The 3 point line has minimized offensive movement, so run around on offense trying to rub off your defender using a screen.
2) Develop a long jump shot, a medium running jump shot , a short running jump shot, and a running layup while moving at your top speed going either to your left or right.
3) Practice your dribbling to where you can go to your right or to your left with equal comfort to you and equal deadliness in scoring.
4) Forget "fancy things" like cross over dribbles (unless you are much faster than your opponent), finger roll layups (unless you can out jump your defender by 2 feet), fakes and pump fakes (as he who hesitates on basketball offense is lost), and dunks (unless you want permanent knee damage to your takeoff knee). You can practice a basic and simple behind the back change of dribble from your right hand to your left hand or from your left hand to your right hand with equal ease because most likely you will be playing a defender who is faster and quicker than you, so a behind the back dribble should only be rarely used.
5) Practice, practice, practice to where all of your movements become second nature.
6) Develop a hook shot crossing the lane while running at full speed from either side of the lane. Also, develop a hook shot if you post down on your defender.
7) Depending upon your age and physical maturity, a lot of the above and below could be difficult until you get into your high school or college years.
8) Develop a deadly 3 point shot.
9) Develop a fall away jump shot from all areas of the court.
10) Do not forget the importance of practicing your free throw for many hours as your free throw form should be the same shooting form you use on a standing or running jump shot.
If you develop moves to your right and to your left and an arsenal of offensive weapons, your defender will not know whether you are coming or going or which direction you are going. Movement is the key as is practice, practice, practice and how much you want to be the best basketball player that you can be. Out run and out hustle your defender as even if your defender is better physically, using the tortoise and the hare principal, as long as you keep running on offense, you will wear down the typical defender or catch him off guard.
